Commissions

Unfortunately, I am not currently taking any commissions at the moment due to my current schedule. However, if you are interested in a commission, please email me to let me know of your interest and I can get in touch with you when my calendar opens up.

A one of a kind painting of your special place, occasion, or pet is the most personal piece of art that you will ever enjoy. I accept a limited number of commissions in graphite each year as every one of them is individual and takes many hours to complete.  I allow time around scheduled projects to accommodate special requests and for my personal work.

In completing a commission, my goal is to take a person back to that moment in time.  A commissioned piece of art work has the opportunity to make someone happy and to put a smile on their face and to take them to another place. Whether it be family, friend or client, it always make me happy when I can produce some artwork that will put a smile of pleasure on their face. It makes me happy when they say they can't stop looking at it and takes them back to a place of happiness in times past. Often these emotional responses come from a collaborative effort in designing a piece through subject, size and style. If you have an idea for a custom artwork then reach out to discuss how it can be brought to life and help create your own unique piece of original art.

Commissioning an artwork is an easy process – simply email me and let me know your requirements.  I can review a selection of your photos if you are unsure about which one might make the best drawing. If possible, it is good to meet in person.

How it works

  • Contact me via email with your ideas/requirements and photo(s) Email me high resolution (300 dpi) digital photos (.jpegs) of the subject (the more photos I have, the better). A good clear photo of the subject matter as you want it to appear in your painting. This photo should be one you are completely happy with. If not provide another one you are happy with or be very specific regarding what changes you want made to the subject matter contained within the photo.
  • After I review the material you have sent me, I will contact you to discuss the details of your future drawing.
  • I will let you know the approximate start time, review your photo(s) and give you a quote valid for 3 months
  • Pay non-refundable 50% deposit* to secure your reservation *Deposits are non-refundable except in the unfortunate case that I need to cancel your booking, in which case you will receive a full refund
  • Once I commence work on your artwork I will update you with progress photos and final image for your approval
  • Your drawing could anywhere from 3 – 6 weeks to complete, depending on the workload that I have along with the complexity and size of your drawing.
  • Upon completion of your drawing, I will email you a picture of the completed drawing and an invoice for the balance due. (You may pay in person or via electronic banking.) Balance remaining is paid when you are 100% satisfied and prior to shipping.
  • Upon receipt of the balance, I will ship your drawing to you or you may arrange to collect the drawing yourself (if you live in the Croydon area of Melbourne, Australia).  A signed Certificate of Authenticity accompanies your painting.
  • Outdoor/natural light, without very dark shadows
  • Photo taken at eye level of the subject (to avoid distortion of features), if a pet portrait
  • Ability to zoom in to see details such as fur direction and individual hairs
  • Light reflected in the eyes
  • Sharp and in focus with no blurry areas other than the background
  • Preferably digital files but I can also work from a printed photo
  • Size
  • Subject
  • Complexity of the piece

Don’t take offense if I should turn down your commission. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it is usually because the photo is not suited to making a great painting or I am is simply too busy to take on another commission at that particular time. What ever the case, I will let you know. At that time you can try a different photo or if the latter, I would be happy to take you details and contact at a later date.

For Pet Portraits

The higher quality the photo, the better I can achieve a photorealistic drawing.  Here are some ideals to look for:

Materials

Drawings are created using professional grade materials. I usually use Fabriano, Arches or Saunders HP watercolour paper these 100% cotton paper, both archival and with just enough texture to capture layers with beautiful details. The mat and backing that artwork arrives in is also 100% archival.

Privacy

Frequently commission projects are of a personal nature and/or in memory of a precious family member.  Sharing these images publicly (via my website portfolio or facebook) is something I will only do if approved by you.  I have done many commissions that will forever remain between myself and the collector and I take pride in that relationship.

Prices

My commission price is based on size and complexity.

Email me for an obligation free quote to get the best idea of cost for you artwork. Framing is not included in the cost of the quote, however your artwork will come with a 100% archival mat and backing.

Shipping and Payment

FREE SHIPPING within Australia. Worldwide Shipping available, please inquire for estimate (import duties/taxes will be charged at time of delivery).

Payment can be in cash or via electronic banking.

*Deposits are non-refundable except in the unfortunate case that I need to cancel your booking, in which case you will receive a full refund.

Why a Blog?

Hello and welcome to my blog!  Thank you for coming to visit. I am an Australian artist based in Melbourne. I love to draw in graphite, but also find enjoyment in working with watercolour. So from time to time you will see the odd watercolour/gouache painting pop up in my feed. Some interesting things about me are: I have been working full time as an artist for nearly 5 years and love it! Before then, I managed an art shop where we also had custom framing and art classes. Another fun fact about me is that I also studied saxophone (Classical) at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne. I also doubled on clarinet, flute and piano. To read more about me click on the about tab.   Why a blog? Well, for a couple of reasons, but in particular my growing frustrations with Facebook. The algorithms that seem to keep changing all the time and now the usage of A.I that meta has introduced to the platform. This introduction of A.I. has left a bad taste in my mouth. Whilst I'm not sure whether

VAS Spring Select Show 2024

The Spring Exhibition for 2024 is just around the corner at the Victorian Artist Society. This show is one of the three Select exhibitions held each year by the VAS. Votes cast by exhibiting artists are used to decide the list of candidates for the Artist of the Year Award Exhibition. Below is my entry for the exhibition and it is simply titled Hydrangeas. I have always had a love of Hydrangeas, particularly the blue variety. Perhaps that is because they were the variety that we had in our garden, but all varieties of hydrangeas are pretty, don't you think? We had them on the farm on the shady side of the house when I was growing up. When I think about the hydrangea flower or see them out and about, I think of the farm where I grew up, Mum's beautiful garden and the happy memories I had growing up there. This drawing is in graphite and is worked from a reference photo, however certain liberties were taken when drawing it. I loved playing with the different shapes of the petals

It's Not Too Late!

Hi Everyone, if you hadn't had the chance to see the VAS Winter Select and 9x5 Exhibitions at the Victorian Artists Society, it's not too late! However, this is the last weekend to do so for both. Both shows finish on the 5th August. There are some fabulous pieces on show and for sale, so I encourage to make your way to the Vic's. There you'll be able to see some high quality art work and also grap a coffee at has VAS cafe. Below is my entry into the Winter Show, Flowing Tree Roots. Not really sure what type of tree it was, but the more I looked at the tree I kept on thinking of a lady with a long flowing dress sitting on a wall. The tree and it's roots, I thought were almost elegant. As usual, I was drawn to the details and enjoyed being lost in the drawing of them onto paper them. What was intended to be completed for Autumn was actually completed just a few week ago. The size is 56x 76cm. Graphite On 300gsm Saunders hot press paper.  This piece along with many ot
