VAS Spring Select Show 2024

The Spring Exhibition for 2024 is just around the corner at the Victorian Artist Society. This show is one of the three Select exhibitions held each year by the VAS. Votes cast by exhibiting artists are used to decide the list of candidates for the Artist of the Year Award Exhibition. Below is my entry for the exhibition and it is simply titled Hydrangeas. I have always had a love of Hydrangeas, particularly the blue variety. Perhaps that is because they were the variety that we had in our garden, but all varieties of hydrangeas are pretty, don't you think? We had them on the farm on the shady side of the house when I was growing up. When I think about the hydrangea flower or see them out and about, I think of the farm where I grew up, Mum's beautiful garden and the happy memories I had growing up there.

This drawing is in graphite and is worked from a reference photo, however certain liberties were taken when drawing it. I loved playing with the different shapes of the petals and how the light and the dark work together to create the finished product. Even though this piece is in monochrome, it still takes me back to the farm.

Drawing size is 39cm x 70cm and in it's frame it is 95cm x 69.5 cm. It is drawn on Fabriano hot pressed watercolour paper (300gsm). The Fabriano paper, the backing and mat are 100% archival and the picture is also framed with UV 70 glass for extra definition of drawing. This drawing, along with many other fabulous pieces of artwork will be for sale.

I invite you all to come and join in the festivities of the opening even, if you're not able to make it, come anyway during the two weeks that the show will be open.

Why a Blog?

Hello and welcome to my blog!  Thank you for coming to visit. I am an Australian artist based in Melbourne. I love to draw in graphite, but also find enjoyment in working with watercolour. So from time to time you will see the odd watercolour/gouache painting pop up in my feed. Some interesting things about me are: I have been working full time as an artist for nearly 5 years and love it! Before then, I managed an art shop where we also had custom framing and art classes. Another fun fact about me is that I also studied saxophone (Classical) at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne. I also doubled on clarinet, flute and piano. To read more about me click on the about tab.   Why a blog? Well, for a couple of reasons, but in particular my growing frustrations with Facebook. The algorithms that seem to keep changing all the time and now the usage of A.I that meta has introduced to the platform. This introduction of A.I. has left a bad taste in my mouth. Whilst I'm not sure whether

It's Not Too Late!

Hi Everyone, if you hadn't had the chance to see the VAS Winter Select and 9x5 Exhibitions at the Victorian Artists Society, it's not too late! However, this is the last weekend to do so for both. Both shows finish on the 5th August. There are some fabulous pieces on show and for sale, so I encourage to make your way to the Vic's. There you'll be able to see some high quality art work and also grap a coffee at has VAS cafe. Below is my entry into the Winter Show, Flowing Tree Roots. Not really sure what type of tree it was, but the more I looked at the tree I kept on thinking of a lady with a long flowing dress sitting on a wall. The tree and it's roots, I thought were almost elegant. As usual, I was drawn to the details and enjoyed being lost in the drawing of them onto paper them. What was intended to be completed for Autumn was actually completed just a few week ago. The size is 56x 76cm. Graphite On 300gsm Saunders hot press paper.  This piece along with many ot
