Journey With the Pencil - An Exhibition of Graphite Works

 



My first solo exhibition Journey with the Pencil is fast approaching. I am both excited and nervous about it, but mostly excited. I extend this invitation out to you all to come see in person what I have been working on.



A bit about the show ...

Journey with the Pencil is a body of artwork that was born out of the desire to improve Sarah’s understanding of tone. Something that started off as a study of tone to improve her watercolour painting, became a passion and a collection of detailed drawings of mostly trees, landscapes and botanical work in graphite. This exhibition is a collection of work that has been created over the last couple of years with the fascination of striving to push the boundaries of graphite and enjoying what the medium has to offer. During this journey Sarah has found that when colour is taken away and the image is reduced to line and tone, much strength and subtleness can be achieved.

VAS Spring Select Show 2024

The Spring Exhibition for 2024 is just around the corner at the Victorian Artist Society. This show is one of the three Select exhibitions held each year by the VAS. Votes cast by exhibiting artists are used to decide the list of candidates for the Artist of the Year Award Exhibition. Below is my entry for the exhibition and it is simply titled Hydrangeas. I have always had a love of Hydrangeas, particularly the blue variety. Perhaps that is because they were the variety that we had in our garden, but all varieties of hydrangeas are pretty, don't you think? We had them on the farm on the shady side of the house when I was growing up. When I think about the hydrangea flower or see them out and about, I think of the farm where I grew up, Mum's beautiful garden and the happy memories I had growing up there. Artist of the Year at the Victorian Artist Society 2024

I am excited to share with you all that I have been invited to be one of the finalists in The Victorian Artists Society’s Hylton Mackley - Artist of the Year Exhibition. This impressive exhibition features artworks by select Victorian Artists Society artists, who have been invited to participate after receiving the highest number of votes from their peers  during three seasonal Selection Exhibitions over the course of the year. Finalists are invited to exhibit up to three pieces, one large and two smaller pieces. This is a prestigious award and very much sort after. The following prizes are given for the AOTY Award Exhibition: *Prize money for 2024 will be $12,000 with an increase in value to 2035 when the prize money is planned to reach circa $23,000.  In addition to the prize money the Artist of the Year will receive a trophy, a framed certificate, and an invitation to hold a solo exhibition in the Cato Gallery, with commission on sales. *The Members’ Choice...

Walking Tree - Completed work

The Walking Tree moves with great demure and elegance. It walks along the rocky areas of the forest. One moment it is still and then the next, it has moved one of it's roots. You don't know it's moving until you find the tree in a different spot of the forest. It is stealth.  When I spotted the reference photo for this tree, I knew I just had to draw it. I immediately thought of a tree walking along the rocky outcrops of a forest. A reference photo was used, however I was not a slave to it. As usual, I played with the drawing and got lost in the detail. There were moments of, will I pull this off okay? Will I finish it in time? I must admit, I was cutting it fine trying to complete this drawing for the VAS drawing exhibition/competition. Normally when I finish a piece, I like to spend time looking at it and tinkering, adjusting and faffing (as my husband would say).
